Everyday I read posts by other black women about the benefits of wearing natural hair. I've read books, I've loooked at numerous websites, I've read the magazines, and I feel decieved! The women in those photos have agreeable looking hair textures that would make this transition feasible. What about the sisters who have "real" black hair??? I have come to conclusion that the only way I can stay natural is to lock my hair.
My hair is very thick, extremely coarse, dry and very difficult to manage. My hair is nearly shoulder length if I have the strength (not to mention 3-5 hours of free time) to properly press it out. BUT, when it's wet it curls back up into itself so that I have the look of a short fro. Heaven help me if I let it dry up like that---it won't be pretty!!
This is my second attempt at working with my natural hair in the recent years. My first attempt began when I was pregnant with my son in 2003-4. I cut off all the perm out of my hair (no patience for the other grow out processes), then spent the next year wearing plaits, cornrows and braids..under a series of wigs.
It's important to add that I had a very high profile, professional position at the time so my "rough" looking natural could not go on display at this stage. I continued on like this for a few more months until my hair had reached shoulder length. I had tired of wearing wigs and could not get the polished look that I wanted so after about 14-15 months of trying to work with my natural hair, I cracked and got a perm!!!
I swear, I did it solely for the convenience and ease of styling! I felt so ashamed at giving up, but my hair was a major time killer. Did I mention the 3 children under 10, husband, house, & dog? I couldn't figure out how to make this work for me!
